The Cider Sessions

Wine Down is back! Each Friday in February we’ll be hosting a FREE instore tasting starting at 6pm.

Friday 3rd: Two Elk cider
Cider is a way of life in Sweden, reflecting the country’s pure, refined and uncomplicated approach to life. These ciders are clean and crisp with a touch of sweetness. They display the generous fruit character that Swedish ciders have become renown for with some refreshing acidity and nice focused flavours. A ripening strawberry element gives aromatic lift to the pristine apple/pear expression and sets these ciders apart from the pack.

  • Two Elk Apple
  • Two Elk Pear

Friday 10th Schwartz Brewery
These local brewers could not be more local. Situated just around the corner on Wentworth Street, the Schwatrz brewery is making headway with their uniquely Sydney ciders and beers. This tasting will showcase their new ‘Sydney Sider’ cider as well as their pilsner beer and an on-tap surprise. Most definitely worth exploring this local champion of craft brews.

  • Sydney Cider
  • Schwartz Pilsner
  • On Tap surprise

Friday 17thFrench Ciders
Has anyone heard the phrase ‘real cider’ recently?! Well if you haven’t, then this is a great place to start. Using traditional French techniques, these unpasteurised, bottle fermented ciders are in the league of fine Champagne (but without the price tag). These ciders are made from 100% fruit juice rather than the 35% often found in some commercial products. This said, this week’s CIDER SESSIONS tasting will explore three differing European styles and expressions…

  • Cidrerie D’Anneville – Normandy
  • Le Père Jules – Pays D’Auge (pear)
  • Manoir De Kinkiz – Cornouailles

Note: We will also be hosting the Australian release of Lillet Rosé and Lillet Rouge as well as tasting them plus the original Lillet Blanc tonight.

Friday 24th: The Apple thief
One of the true ‘ciders of the moment’ the Pink Lady cider has taken Sydney cider scene by storm.  Perhaps one of the most satisfying factors about the cider (despite the awesome taste) is the philosophy adopted in their production. Rather than using purpose grown apples, the apple thief take quality pink lady apples with slight imperfects that cannot be displayed on supermarket shelves and rather than put them to waste, makes beautifully pristine cider from them.  It is this eco-friendly ideology that takes this cider to the next level…

Now to the cider itself, a slight pinkish colour, it offers vibrant, ripe red fruit aromas, backed by full red and green apple scents. In the mouth there is a nice balance between sweetness and acid, leaving you with full flavours but a vitally fresh finish. One of the best we’ve ever tasted…!

Discover the Mornington Peninsula

When: Thursday March 15th, 2012

Once just a large picnic area for bored Melbournian’s, Mornington has well and truly established itself as a premium wine region. While a number of varieties are grown on the peninsula it is the Burgundian double act of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that are the regions clear specialties.

Click here to read an article on Mornington….

While there are plenty of established names and bigbrands in Mornington, what really makes the region interesting are the small producers. The region seems to be able to produce a plethora of small family estates and funky garage wines (probably due to all those bored Melbournians).
