The past two years have been a watershed period for Australian gins – every time we turn our backs a new Aussie distillery has popped up with a new product.
The famous mothers ruin has undergone a significant revival, led by some trailblazing British products in recent decades. Not only is it no longer shunned, but whole festivals and bar menus both public and private are being built around it.
But what exactly is gin? What makes it different from a flavoured vodka? Why are there so many coming out in Australia? And why now?
Introducing The Oak Barrel’s Gin Appreciation tasting nights, a semi-regular evening that will be held through 2018 to explore the latest and greatest gins on the market.
On the night we’ll go through a range of styles and flavours, led by The Oak Barrel’s spirits expert. We’ll be making gin and tonics, but you’ll be encouraged to smell and taste them straight as well. Not only does this help get over some of gin’s ‘stigma’, but also it helps with sensory differentiation.
There’s so much to try in the world of gin, let’s try and get the most out of it.
