Balnaves 'The Tally' Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Balnaves 'The Tally' Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Outstanding deep red in colour, and purple tint. Big nose of ripe fruit with grilled nuts, smokey notes, rich fruit, prunes, liquorice, tobacco combined with smoky vanillin oak. The palate is full, rich and softly textured. It has complex ripe fruit, dark seaweed characters, great length and persistence, finishing with firm tannins. Great example of Coonawarra in a hot year.

Drink now or hold on to for a few more years.

Brundlmayer 'Zobinger Heiligenstein Lyra' Riesling 2012

Brundlmayer 'Zobinger Heiligenstein Lyra' Riesling 2012

The Bründlmayer family owns 12 hectares right in the centre of the Zöbinger Heiligenstein, of which 10,5  hectares are planted with Riesling. From a geological point of view the Zöbinger Heiligenstein site is not only the oldest but probably also the most interesting on our estate: the soil consists desert sandstone, volcanic sediment and carbonized remains of primeval vegetation. The uniqueness of this soil, plus its perfect gradient and position, provide ideal preconditions for growing outstanding wines. During the day, warm winds stream along the terrassen whereas by nightfall cool gusts from the North start blowing through the Kamp Valley and bring forward the aromatic expression of the grapes.

About 20% of our Heiligenstein vineyards are trained in a Lyra trellis system. The vine bifurcates in a way that the branches seem to reach to the heavens like sun-worshippers. This method doubles canopy exposure and favors aeration which improves photosynthesis and prevents dreaded fungus diseases. Yields are restricted by rigorous thinning and although harvest started late only healthy berries without botrytis were brought in. These techniques result in increasing the quality of grapes to show a similar intensity as those deriving from old vines.

An awesome wine and a personal favourite. Combines richness and depth with freshness and acidity. With age for yonks. Buy and cellar now. (Julian A.)

    Craggy Range Sophia 2002

    Craggy Range Sophia 2002

The best parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot Bordeaux varietals are selected from the Gimblett Gravels vineyard and blended to make the richly layered and precisely constructed ‘Sophia’. Grapes are meticulously managed, harvested and fermented individually and blended to produce a wine that is a unique canvas of its place.

Intense brooding, deep black cherry colours, almost opaque. Concentrated, complex aromas of black plums, cassis, liquorice, root spices, tobacco, coffee and violets that in their youth are tightly held. The palate is densely structured, with concentrated flavours that reflect the nose adding a further hint of sweet blueberry pie and bitter chocolate notes with fantastic fine fruits and oak tannins to finish.

    Drinking beautifully now.

    Domaine de Marcoux Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012

    Domaine de Marcoux Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2012

Marcoux has 13 parcels of biodynamically farmed vines scattered across the appellation. They are, therefore, blessed with an enviable cross section of Châteauneuf terroir, from the iconic alluvial stones to sand, gravel, clay and limestone. The average age of the vines that supply fruit for this wine is 50+ years old with the oldest being 110 years. In 2012 the blend is 80 per cent Grenache, with 10 per cent Mourvèdre, 7 per cent Syrah and 3 per cent Cinsault.

The grapes are sorted both in the vineyard and on a sorting table in the cellars, destemmed, crushed and cooled, which results in a short cold soak (2-3 days) before the indigenous yeast fermentation takes off. In total, the wine stays in contact with its skins for two to three weeks and then matures for approximately 18 months in concrete vats (65%) and 50 hl neutral oak foudres (35%). The wine is neither fined nor filtered.

A fleshy and rich style yet with excellent balance and structure. Loads of spice and ripe cherry, raspberry and anise. Smooth and fine grained with plenty of length. Drink now or age. As you will.

Eldridge Estate MV6 Pinot Noir 2005

Eldridge Estate MV6 Pinot Noir 2005

A super rare offering of this excellent Mornington Pinot Noir. Earthy and complex with smooth tannins and excellent length. Rare and interesting.

This wine is made from a single patch of MV6 – rows 33 – 35. The bunches are destemmed but the resulting skin and juice mix contains 95% whole berries. A 3 day pre-fermentation cold soak preceded a natural ferment with no yeast being added. The wines were pressed in our gentle air bag press (see winemakers diary under the Cellar Door web page) and then aged in French oak barrels from a range of tonnelleries.
