Balnaves 'The Tally' Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Balnaves 'The Tally' Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Outstanding deep red in colour, and purple tint. Big nose of ripe fruit with grilled nuts, smokey notes, rich fruit, prunes, liquorice, tobacco combined with smoky vanillin oak. The palate is full, rich and softly textured. It has complex ripe fruit, dark seaweed characters, great length and persistence, finishing with firm tannins. Great example of Coonawarra in a hot year.

Drink now or hold on to for a few more years.

Bass Phillip 'Crown Prince' Pinot Noir 2014

Bass Phillip 'Crown Prince' Pinot Noir 2014

‘Crown Prince’ is a drink-now style that can be enjoyed immediately with exotic food matches. The colour is quite deep and the aroma has fresh berry fruit characters with overtones of cherry, plum and some spices. There are attractive berry fruit flavours with some meaty and earthy characters as well. The middle palate shows some development with a textured, quite rich berry character together with a hint of fungus. With its extra time in the bottle the wine has begun to ‘fill-out’ and showing very attractive fleshy overtones and a little earthiness.

Hidden dark fruit richness on the aroma with spice. Fills the mouth with full fruitiness, the sourness of cherry pips, firm natural acidity and a clean, alcoholic finish. Light tannins. Easy to quaff with a steak! Bottled earlier than usual (12 months), this wine has a real "drink now" feel.

Bass Phillip 'Premium' Pinot Noir 2014

Bass Phillip 'Premium' Pinot Noir 2014

Bass Phillip’s flagship wine: a wine with strong personality in aroma and complex flavor. Layered, textured and long. Improves in the cellar for more than ten years.

Very complete with intense dark fruits, acid backbone and complex, long & lingering flavours of many kinds: ripe but tight; fully tannic but balanced. Supple, chewy fruits: textured to the end with furry tannins wrapped in sweet fruit. Possibly the best ever. Will improve for fifteen years!

    Belliviere 'Calligramme' Jasnieres 2013

    Belliviere 'Calligramme' Jasnieres 2013

2013 Jasnières Calligramme is the top Jasnières produced at the estate and comes from vines over 50 years old. It is dry (ish), always elegant, complex and brilliant and regarded in France as one of the best white wines produced in the Loire Valley and as such it is rare. Tasting note: From my impressions in January – Wow. Just exquisite. From 50+ year old vines, this is an elixir, filled with sapid, stony flavours and a floral lift. A stunning, multi-dimensional white wine - and one to keep.

    Vega Sicilia 'Unico' 1991

    Vega Sicilia 'Unico' 1991

A blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the flagship of Vega Sicilia. After its fermentation, its goes through what is probably the world's longest ageing of a red wine, almost 10 years between wood and bottle. The different stages take place in different types of barrel: American and French wood, new and used 225-litre barrels, 20,000-litre vats, each batch is what determines the type of wood and the time spent in each container.

    Brokenwood 'Graveyard' Shiraz 2001

    Brokenwood 'Graveyard' Shiraz 2001

From its first release in 1991, the Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz was listed by the Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine as ‘Outstanding’ on every release until 2010, when it was elevated to the highest category of ‘Exceptional’ and has remained for each release since. The wines are ripe yet elegant on release with the use of large format oak helping to integrate tannin and fruit sweetness. Medium bodied with great sturecture, Graveyard is a wine that shows its best from 10 years of age onwards.

The Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz was named after original plans for the site which was to be a cemetery within Pokolbin, however it was never used as such. The first single vineyard selection for the Graveyard Vineyard was in 1983. Originally planted with Shiraz and Cabernet, the heavy clay soil resulted in vintages of low yield but with extraordinary concentration of flavour in the berries, providing a distinctive and premium wine style. Today the 15 hectare Graveyard Vineyard comprises solely of Shiraz and is broken up into a number of blocks named in good Brokenwood fun; Pa’s, 7 Acre, Bush, Duck’s, Road, Middle, End, Kat’s and Dog’s, State of Origin, Vegas and Trees.

Brundlmayer 'Zobinger Heiligenstein Lyra' Riesling 2012

Brundlmayer 'Zobinger Heiligenstein Lyra' Riesling 2012

The Bründlmayer family owns 12 hectares right in the centre of the Zöbinger Heiligenstein, of which 10,5  hectares are planted with Riesling. From a geological point of view the Zöbinger Heiligenstein site is not only the oldest but probably also the most interesting on our estate: the soil consists desert sandstone, volcanic sediment and carbonized remains of primeval vegetation. The uniqueness of this soil, plus its perfect gradient and position, provide ideal preconditions for growing outstanding wines. During the day, warm winds stream along the terrassen whereas by nightfall cool gusts from the North start blowing through the Kamp Valley and bring forward the aromatic expression of the grapes.

About 20% of our Heiligenstein vineyards are trained in a Lyra trellis system. The vine bifurcates in a way that the branches seem to reach to the heavens like sun-worshippers. This method doubles canopy exposure and favors aeration which improves photosynthesis and prevents dreaded fungus diseases. Yields are restricted by rigorous thinning and although harvest started late only healthy berries without botrytis were brought in. These techniques result in increasing the quality of grapes to show a similar intensity as those deriving from old vines.

An awesome wine and a personal favourite. Combines richness and depth with freshness and acidity. With age for yonks. Buy and cellar now. (Julian A.)
