Wine Appreciation - Thursday 26th May

Having had so much fun at the inaugural Wine Appreciation night, we’re back with another night of wine education and enjoyment at The Oak Barrel.

Designed to showcase a variety of wine flavours and explain how they come about, we’ve put together a bit of a theme for our May event.

Stepping away from some of the more ‘household’ grapes, we’ll be looking at some Gamay, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. What is the history of these grapes? Where do they grow? How do they differ to the likes of Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay?

Most importantly, how does that affect the flavour in your glass?

Some of these varieties were first recorded in the Loire Valley and Beaujolais regions of France in the 15th century. Excitingly, more and more young gun producers are embracing these revitalised varietals. Jauma and Good Intentions Wine Co. are bottling fantastic and expressive wines from these grapes – they’re far more than mere substitutes.

Following in the theme of our extremely popular Whisky Appreciation nights and an increase in the demand for wine knowledge, we’ve built these tastings to be entertaining, enjoyable and accessible.

These tastings will be suitable for everyone who wishes to know a little more about wine. We will be trying a mix of different domestic and/or international wines with themes for each month. It won’t be too technical a tasting but rather a night of discovery so you’ll be able to understand what’s actually in your glass. It will also give you an appreciation of what styles suit you best (and how to get the best out of each glass!).

Truth is, there is no ‘best wine’, the best wine is the wine you like the most and that’s what we’ll be exploring. It doesn’t matter how much a bottle costs, inexpensive or premium, the tastings will be based on quality and focus on small growers and sustainable products.

Come and join us for a fun night to discover (or rediscover) the world of wine around a good glass. Hosted by the Oak Barrel’s own wine specialist, we’ll go through seven (or eight) different expressions exhibiting a range of flavour profiles and from around the world.
