Springbank Tasting With David Allen

13/01/2016

Located in Scotland’s Campbeltown region, the Springbank distillery claims to be the oldest independently and family-owned, distillery in Scotland.

Renowned around the world for their hand made and world class whiskies, Springbank itself is home to three brands – the lightly peated and fruity Springbank, the triple-distilled unpeated and air-dried malt of Hazelburn and the heavily peated Longrow. All of which showcase fantastic complexity, body and depth and offer drinkers a window to the whiskies of decades past.

Once home to over 30 distilleries, the Campbeltown region suffered a stark decline, for a number of reasons, and from that peak of 30+ there are now just three working distilleries in the township. Not long ago, there was only two.

Springbank and the J.A Mitchell & Co. company have been at the forefront of Campbeltown’s revival and their staunch dedication to traditional methods – everything is done onsite, by hand – is making them one of the whisky aficionado’s most beloved producers.

With Dave Allen from Springbank on hand to talk all things Springbank, we’ll be sampling five whiskies from across their Springbank, Hazelburn and Longrow ranges (including the limited release organic ‘Green’ and the limited edition 17-year-old ‘Sherry Wood’, which retails for around $260). On top of that we’ll be cracking a 30-Year-Old cognac from the archives of Cadenheads – J.A Mitchel & Co.’s independent bottler.

“Oh Campbeltown Loch, I wish ye were whisky.”
