Smoke In The Water: A Smoky Whisky Masterclass

This April The Oak Barrel is excited to bring you Smoke In The Water – a whisky tasting based around peaty, smoky and generally powerful whiskies from around Scotland.

Tasting six whiskies, the centrepiece of the event will be the 25-year-old Talisker, a masterpiece from the Isle Of Skye. With this tasting in mind, we’ve sourced out a particular bottling – the 2007 edition – which weighs in at the natural cask strength of 58.1%. It also means the whisky was distilled in 1982 and earlier.

It’s the strongest whisky of the night – just – with the Finlaggan single malt, sourced from an unnamed Islay distillery, a 58% beast.

We’ll also be trying a perennial favourite which is only just finding its way to Australia – the Bowmore Darkest sherry finished 15-year-old. The fragrant Bowmore smoke dances with the sherry cask fruit magnificently.

It’ll be a fascinating compare-and-contrast with the Ledaig 18-year-old, the peated line from The Isle Of Mull’s Tobermory distillery that’s been aged in a sherry cask.

Fior, a smoke-infused mainland release from the oft-overlooked Fettercairn distillery, will also be making an appearance as will Batch 1 of Ceobanach. It’s a peated release from Islay’s Bunnahabhain distillery, who usually buck the regional trend with unpeated malt.

The night will be hosted by The Oak Barrel’s Scott Fitzsimons.

Tickets are strictly limited.

Fettercairn Fior (42%)
Bowmore Darkest 15 Year Old (43%)
