Romanian Wine Masterclass

We'd like to invite you to an intimate tasting at The Oak Barrel with some of the best wines Romania has to offer.

It is a very rare occasion to try the wines from this south-east European country as they fly well-and-truly under the radar in Australia. Romania has a rich history of winemaking and their output is often widely underappreciated - this is going to be a very good evening!

Romania is an interesting country with a great history - over 4,000 years - of winemaking. It’s reputation as a producer has suffered in recent years, mainly due to the undulating political status of the country throughout the past century.

Not to get bogged down with the history we'll outline below, modern Romania is one of Europe's biggest wine producers and the industry is experiencing a revival with a host of exciting winemakers poushing the boundaries to make fantastic wines. It’s these wines we'll be enjoying this September.

According to legend, Dionysos, the God of Wine, was born in Thracia, in what is now the territory of Romania. In the 19th century, right up until the outbreak of the First World War, Romania enjoyed close links with France.

In the viticulture sector, these links culminated with French wine growers’ advice and practical help extended through to the end of the 19th century, when phylloxera hit Romania. The result was that much of the post-phylloxera replanting was carried out using "French" varieties: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and others.

From 1947 until 1989, Romania was under a communist government, which excluded the ownership of private property. All wine production of Romania belonged to the state in the form of state-owned co-operatives. Starting from 1990, after the fall of the communist regime, the new wave of modern day producers first appeared.

This tasting will be host by Adrian Filiuta, importer and sommelier of Wine Of Romania.
