New Austrian Wines in Store

13/07/2016

A small and beautiful country surrounded by Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia - Austria has a very long history with wine.

There is evidence of grape growing in the Traisental reason 4,000 years ago. They have been growing grapes since 700 BC with the Celts, the Romans and Charlemagne. After World War 1 Austria was the third biggest wine producer in the world, exporting in bulk to be blended with wine from Germany and other countries.

In terms of vines, Gruner Veltliner is the dominant white grape and represents a third of the vines in Austria. The second most popular is Zweigelt and Welschriesling and, of course, they grow the main varieties such as Riesling or Chardonnay.

Speaking of grapes, I was recently tasting one of the rare native grape Roter Veltliner from winemakers Martin & Anna Arndorfer. It is a very old and rare variety that is not related to Gruner Veltliner and where the berry is slightly rose. It is used to make amber or ‘orange’ wine. It's such a beautiful variety with plenty of white fruits flavours such as lemon, stone fruit and apples. I couldn't resist to grab a few for the store.

I would like to introduce you to three wines from the same winery and made by Martin & Anna Arndorfer, a young and talented couple making very pure, precise and fine wine. They are a beautiful expression of their soil (a mix of slate, granite, gneiss) and they are absolutely delicious.

If you've never tried Austrian wine, this is a good way to start!!
