Introducing Main and Cherry Wines

31/05/2016

Having sampled many of the Sexton family's Main & Cherry wines since they opened the winery in 2009, it's fair to say their expressions are an absolute bargain for the price.

Farmed and grown organically, they avoid any herbicides or synthetic fungicides in the process. Hand made in small batches, vigneron Mike Sexton has the magic touch - so to speak - and this is seriously good quality juice making great quality wine.

One of their alluring features is the use of a lot of non-mainstream varietals, such as Gruner Veltliner (a grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic) this year. Each year they also work with Sangiovese and matured in a ceramic “egg” vessel for the first time, their current Sangiovese is a match for any cheap Italian Chianti we find in Australia.

Primarily though, there is a lot of purity and freshness in Sexton's wines.

In their own words, "After finishing Oenology at Adelaide University in 2003, Mike spent time staining his hands red with good company at big and small wineries in McLaren Vale and various parts of the world. Chasing his dream of crafting his own wine, Main & Cherry was launched in 2009 from their own single vineyard Shiraz."

They now have planted Grenache and Mourvedre, the fruits of which are tasting beautiful in the new GSM (Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre).

Available now in store or online:

Main & Cherry Gruner Veltiner 2015

"Light, breezy, very tangy, low on impact, but high on drinkability. In the palate, tonic tang again, high impact of citrussy stuff, little lick of herbs, but lean on flavour in a good way. It’s nice to sip on, no doubt." Mike Bennie - The Wine Front

Main & Cherry Sauvignon Blanc 2015

A true Adelaide Hills expression of the variety. Tropical fruits, passionfruit, lime, grapefruit and spring bean flavours. Finishing with a lively, crisp and cleansing palate.

Main & Cherry Sangiovese 2013

"Aromas of rose petals and flavours of cherries, candied-apples rounded out with green-tea like tannins. This style is all about expressing the fruit of the vineyard, without any excessive oak handling or meddling on our behalf. It was the first year we matured wine in our ceramic “egg” vessel and feel this was very well suited to Sangiovese, helping to frame it’s delicate savoury tannin structure." Mike Sexton

Main & Cherry Shiraz 2013

Elegant and well rounded wines with flavours of chocolate, rich dark fruits and subtle mint characters. The acid structure of this vintage gives a brightness to the mouthfeel and will ensure longevity in the cellar to those with patience.

Main & Cherry GSM 2014

"The palate is chewy with wood and fruit tannin, toasty, medium weight and finishes spicy and dry. It’s a good, honest, well made, nicely put together red that won’t offend anyone, and might thrill a few." Mike Bennie - The Wine Front

 Main & Cherry Tempranillo 2014

A vibrant, medium to full-bodied style with soft, plush tannins. Characters of ripe cherries, blackcurrant, plums, cinnamon spice and earthy tones.
